WHEN SHOULD A TOOTH BE PULLED?

At Dentist Tree of the Heights, we only ever perform emergency tooth removal when it’s necessary for the rest of your smile’s health and well-being.

SEVERE CAVITY

When tooth decay becomes severe enough, it starts attacking the system of blood vessels and nerves keeping a tooth healthy and alive. If a tooth has been damaged too severely and passed the point of no return, even a root canal can’t save it. Your dentist must pull the tooth to stop the infection from spreading and causing further harm.

ADVANCED GUM DISEASE

Untreated gum disease attacks the gum tissues, jaw bone, and connective ligaments keeping teeth solidly in place. As they are gradually destroyed, teeth lose their mooring and become loose enough to fall out. Our caring dentists may suggest emergency teeth extraction before this point to save patients time, pain, and future complications.

BROKEN TOOTH

A major break or fracture in a tooth can cause severe enough damage to the inner tooth that it can’t be saved with a root canal or crown. Depending on the location and severity of the damage, the tooth may need to be removed surgically.

OVERCROWDING

Patients with extra teeth or crowded smiles may need to have a tooth or two pulled before starting orthodontic treatment. This frees up space in the mouth so that our orthodontists can comfortably and easily move your teeth where we want them without any pain or issues.

IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH

While not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, impacted ones that can’t emerge from the gums are a different story. These teeth have a high risk of damaging their neighbors, painful cysts, severe cavities, and gum disease. Impacted wisdom tooth extraction is often considered a necessary preventive treatment.

THE TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCESS

What is tooth extraction? Your experience depends on your tooth’s position and needs.

SIMPLE EXTRACTION

Simple tooth removal is needed for teeth that have emerged from the gums and can be easily reached by our tools. A dental elevator can loosen the tooth, and forceps are then used to pull the tooth free. The entire procedure is quick and easy, often taking between 3 and 15 minutes for each tooth.

SURGICAL EXTRACTION

Surgical extractions are performed for impacted wisdom tooth removal and on severely broken teeth. For these teeth, an elevator can’t reach them, so a small incision is made in the gums. From there, our expert dentists can proceed similarly to a simpler procedure. On average, the treatment takes about 45 minutes.

Does tooth extraction hurt? Not at all! While it can be nerve-wracking to be told you need emergency tooth extraction, our caring dentists ensure the entire procedure is as comfortable as possible. We numb the tooth with a safe but potent local anesthetic so you never feel more than a bit of pressure. We also have dental sedation available for additional comfort, both in mind and body.

AFTER EMERGENCY TOOTH REMOVAL: YOUR NEXT STEPS

Once your tooth is gone, our dentists can restore your beautiful smile with our array of replacement options.

DENTAL BRIDGES

An affordable way to replace a tooth is with a dental bridge. Bridges are a connected piece of false teeth bookended by two crowns. As the crowns are placed on the teeth neighboring the empty tooth socket, our dentists can replace up to four missing teeth in a row simultaneously.

REMOVABLE DENTURES

Dentures are incredibly flexible to patients’ needs, restoring anywhere from a few to all of your teeth with a single comfortable appliance. And unlike bridges, they can replace multiple teeth even if they aren’t next to each other. Great-fitting dentures can stay in place securely by using the natural shape of your jaws and any remaining teeth to their advantage.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

A dental implant is the best and healthiest way to replace a missing tooth. They can completely remake your old tooth, root and all. Implants are inserted into the jaw and stay in place by fusing with the bone instead of relying on nearby teeth. This change keeps the jawbone stronger and healthier, and your new tooth can last more than 20 years.
