What is gum disease? Also known as periodontal disease, it is an infection of the gums as dental plaque, bacteria, and tartar collect on your teeth’s roots below the gums. While it begins as mild gingivitis, it can quickly turn into a dental emergency as it starts attacking the bones and soft tissues holding your teeth in place. Without treatment from our seasoned periodontist staff, unchecked gum disease can lead to a dental worst case scenario: tooth loss!

WHAT ARE MY GUM DISEASE TREATMENT OPTIONS?
Count on our talented periodontal team to tackle your periodontal disease head-on.
When only in the gingivitis stage, you can quickly reverse the damage on your own with some good, old-fashioned brushing and flossing. With two weeks of consistent dental hygiene, you can completely remove the plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line. Once the gums can finally breathe again, they’ll quickly heal and return to their healthy pink. However, with periodontitis stages, you’ll need to see our experienced team for professional care.
GUM DISEASE STAGES
Periodontal disease may first appear mild, but it can quickly grow out of control without a dentist’s expert help.
Stage 1: Gingivitis
As plaque and oral bacteria build up on the teeth, they spread under the gums and gradually inflame them. In as little as 3 days to a week, gingivitis can set in as the soft tissues become red, swollen, and tender. You may even notice “pink in the sink” as your gums bleed while brushing and flossing your teeth.
Stage 2: Slight Periodontitis
When gingivitis turns into slight periodontitis, the damage to your gums is permanent as the gums start receding and pulling away from your teeth. As deep gum pockets appear, more food and plaque can be trapped and speed up the gum disease process. The infection also reaches the bone and connective tissues holding your teeth in place.
Stage 3: Moderate Periodontitis
Moderate periodontitis is irreversible as the damage to the gums, connective tissues, and bones worsens. Gum pockets deepen, and oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream to infect the rest of the body. Over time, this can lead to several general health issues, including heart disease and pneumonia. Your teeth may start shifting out of alignment as they start to loosen.
Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis
Once advanced periodontitis appears, the gum infection attacks the jaw bone and connective tissues in earnest, as 50 to 90% of the original tissue is lost. Teeth lose their solid anchoring, especially as pockets of pus called dental abscesses appear in the gums at the teeth’s roots. At this point, the teeth become so loose that they are in danger of falling out, and your dentist may need to extract them.
