DO I NEED A ROOT CANAL?
Seeing our dentists at the first warning signs can mean the difference in saving your tooth.
Root canals are performed when the dental pulp, the tooth’s soft center containing the sensitive nerves and blood vessels, is damaged by tooth decay or trauma. They are a helpful way for our caring dentists to save your tooth even from the brink of death. However, seeing our team for immediate treatment can mean the difference between keeping your natural tooth healthy and requiring extraction. Time is of the essence, and you want to see an endodontist as soon as possible at the first warning signs:
If you feel your chronic toothache suddenly disappear, please call our Houston dental office immediately at 281.849.8858. At this point, your root canal infection may have spread deep enough to put your tooth’s life at stake. But with immediate emergency treatment, you can count on our compassionate dentists to perform a painless and expert root canal to save your troublesome tooth.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE
What is a root canal? Our dentists ensure your tooth is brought back to full health quickly and easily.
At Dentist Tree of the Heights, we make sure our patients’ root canal treatment is always as smooth and painless as possible. The procedure itself is no more stressful or uncomfortable than your normal dental filling.
We will first numb the area around your tooth with local anesthetic. Once we’re sure you won’t feel anything more than some slight pressure, our dentists will remove the injured and diseased pulp tissues. Depending on the damage’s extent, this may involve clearing an entire tooth root or draining a tooth abscess.
The tooth is then disinfected and filled with a rubber material called gutta-percha. From there, our endodontist team can reinforce and seal the tooth with either a filling or dental crown. This strengthens the tooth against future damage and decay. With great hygiene, care, and maintenance, your tooth can stay in excellent shape for decades without any further issues!
How long does a root canal take? The length of your root canal treatment depends on the severity of your tooth’s infection or damage. Most root canals take between 30 and 60 minutes, but more complex and severe cases can take as long as 90. This time is typically split between either one or two visits. Patients who need two visits will have a temporary filling or crown placed after the first appointment, and the second will be done once the permanent restoration is ready.
ROOT CANAL VS. EXTRACTION
Our Houston dentists are dedicated to keeping your smile as happy and healthy as possible.
When a tooth is on the brink and in danger of dying, you may have an ultimatum: should you get a root canal or have the tooth pulled? If possible, we always highly recommend a root canal over tooth extraction. Your smile is always happier and healthier with as many teeth preserved as possible. As amazing as our office’s tooth replacement options are, nothing quite beats a natural tooth. And root canals are an endodontist’s final defense, protecting your smile against tooth loss. Tooth extractions should only be done if there is no other way to save your tooth.
Some patients believe it would overall save them a lot of time, pain, and money to just have a troublesome tooth removed. However, this is nowhere near the truth. Even if you’re worried about your upfront root canal cost, saving your natural tooth is a more than worthwhile investment. Missing teeth should never be left alone. Otherwise, the gaps left behind can lead to jawbone shrinking, teeth becoming crooked and loose, and further dental decay and tooth loss. However, replacing a missing tooth requires even more time and money than a simple root canal.
